Week 6 EOC: Illicit Trade

Today's assignment is one that I'm extremely passionate about. Counterfeiting any type of products in my opinion is not acceptable. Prior to viewing the film Illicit Trade in class today, I did not support purchasing counterfeit goods or "bootleg" products which it's commonly known as on the streets of many major cities. After viewing the film, I now have a stronger stand on not supporting the purchase of counterfeit goods, but for a totally different reason.

Prior to viewing the film my reason for not supporting counterfeit goods was because I was wearing my business hat. Looking at it from the perspective,  I would not want someone selling my creative works reaping the benefits from my creative process and hard work. In other words, stealing my idea and profiting from it. Now after viewing the film, I'm viewing this matter from a more sensitive perspective. I really did not consider the fact that if you can counterfeit clothing, handbags, and shoes what could stop someone from counterfeiting something that can be ingested? I really didn't think of the more severe effects it has on human life.

Cutting into a large companies profit margin is really not a big issue, as compared to someone loosing their life from taking medication prescribed by a physician. One that has been diluted, or replaced with harmful toxins.
As a fashion designer, I have a very special interest on this subject matter. I have considered how I would respond if I learned my products were being counterfeited. I think it's a great compliment that your material products are worth copying. However, when it comes to a human beings life, no amount of money can replace it.

I am learning a lot in this class. It has given me a whole new way of looking at certain areas of the business. I find myself asking, what type of security measures and procedures can I impliment to better protect our products? I'm aware this is an ongoing problem and it has been going on for a very long time. Counterfeiting will not be stopped completely, however I'm hopeful that there will be a solution, putting an end to counterfeiting products which are harmful to a persons physical being.

Week 4 EOC: Jeopardy Game

Today's class assignment was to play the game of Jeopardy which we had to build ourselves. The formula was to create questions using the definitions related to a wide rage of patent law. It was challenging, yet a great way of studing. This was the first time I've had the opportunity to create a game and study in this way. Although many of the questions can point to the same definition, there are key words you must look for in order to determine the correct answer. I discovered this as we were playing the game. Having read many of the definitions some of them sound simular to another definition, however it is due to the related terms.

Many of these terms for patent law do not relate directly to my business which is fashion & retail management, however the knowledge that I'm receiving is definitely for my benefit and will assist me in making very important decisions regarding the process of creating garments and protecting my work. Contracts on the otherhand will be a major part of my business and this class is helping me to understand some basic information that will in turn allow me to ask an attorney the right questions.

The information I've learned thus far has tought me to think in a whole new way.  My creative juices are flowing in a direction which may lead me to create my own fabric. All this information related to inventing makes me want to invent something! I'm really looking forward to learning more about copyrights and trademarks as these will be a major part of my business. Many of my questions will be answered in these chapters and I now have the perfect study plan. Not only for this class, but I can use this game layout to study anything thanks to my instructor for this wonderful idea. Learning something new everyday is fun, however when you make it this fun learning a few new things everyday is really not so challenging!

Week 3 EOC Jeopardy Questions

Question #1 Any federal provision that requires the disqualification of a patent?

Question #2 An administrative proceeding "interference" scheduled by the USPTO, to determine who gets the patent in situations where two applicants both claim the same invention?

Question #3 This statement provides the USPTO with a head start in determing whether the invention deserves a patent and must be filed with a regular patent application?

EOC Week 2 Erin Brockovich

Although I have not seen the movie Erin Brockovich in its entirety the short viewing in class has peeked my interest. My personal opionion of the film was that the efforts of a caring woman and the money driven attorney, were determined to be a voice for a small town of people whom nobody really seemed to care about. I still feel that Erin Brockovich is a loving person, and the money driven attorney Ed Masry had their own personal agenda, however Hollywood has to make money also and what better way to do that then to sell tickets at the box office. People respond when they feel something. By the film being marketed based on a true story we the public tend to believe that the Hollywood script is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Life is not fair and justice is not fair either. I had to do research in order to find out more details of the events portrayed in the film. According to Brockovich.com Erin began working at Masry & Vititoe after she hired the law firm to represent her in a personal injury case due to a traffic accident. The settlement she received was not enough to secure her for the rest of her life. Little did she know this meeting would lead to a series of events that would forever change her life.

The case in 1996 involving residents of a small town in Hinkley, California which Erin discovered while filing papers, turned out to be the largest direct action lawsuit in U.S history. The utility giant Pacific Gas & Electric had been poising the small towns water for over 30 years. The poison affected the health of the population. The settlement was over 300 Million in damages to more than 600 Hinkley residents. Erin Brockovich received 2.5 Million as a bonus. Fumento.com stated that recent research on Chromium 6 exposure which was the chemical causing illnesses such as miscarages, rashes and even cancer from the Hinkley plant showed that "not only was there no excess of cancer when compared to the general California population, but the overall PG & E worker death rate was significantly much lower than those of other Californians. The real life aftermath to events portrayed in the movie provides a sobering twist on this "true story."

Week 1 EOC:My Voice

As a professional in the fashion industry It is my goal to create beautiful timeless garments that will immediately capture your heart. My mission is to motivate and encourage anyone who dares to dream.  It is never to late to become the person you've always wanted to be. Our corporation will create many jobs in the United States. My designs are created with great passion as a direct expression of my love for Art. I choose to use fabric on the body as a visual display of personal expression, which allows me to begin each day with a BLANK canvas! I consider myself an "Out The Box" designer because greatness can not be contained. I design for men, women and children. Creativity has no limits and neither does my designs. I also design furniture, shoes and accessories. With so many ideas flooding my brain,  often times it is hard to keep up with them all. It is a fact that inspiration can be found anywhere and I find it everyday.

I want to align myself with many different non-profit organizations in order to donate clothing for those suffering from various challenges.  Compassion plus passion and my love for spending money is what drives me to keep pushing forward over and through the many hurdles that come with life's journey. Five years from now I see myself as the Creative Director of my very own clothing lines. This has to be my purpose in life because it is the only activity that brings me absolute joy. Dreaming big is the easy part, fulfilling the massive dream is the challenge. One in which I embrace with open arms,  I gladly welcome. I live by the familiar phrase "Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life". When I'm creating new collections I lose track of time. I can go for hours without thinking of food and those who know me personally know aside from breathing, I love to eat. For those of you who are now thinking why didn't I pursue a career in Culinary? the answer is very simple, I do not love to cook!

It's all about fashion for me. Learning the business is very important to me as I plan on becoming a force to be reckoned with in this not so easy to break through Fashion Industry. Building a brand and a team known for truly caring about a persons life and not just catering to a particular lifestyle is the foundation I'm standing on. I'm well on my way to living my dream because I decided not to waist any more time putting off what I really want to do anymore! Having the courage to pursue my dream and knowing that it's never to late to learn, means I am successful already! Make everyday your opportunity to be the best you, you can be!
